My Approach to Wedding Photography
Hi, I'm Sam, a Kent and London Wedding Photographer living in Canterbury. I love shooting Weddings as they're always a lot of fun. People seem to let their guard down and let their emotions flow (not easy for us Brits) for just that one day. It's a privilege and honour to have someone trust you to photograph their Wedding day. As a photographer it allows me to practice so many different types of photography in a single day, from family portraits to photo journalism.
There are lots of different Wedding Photography styles out there these days it can start to become a bit confusing. People brand themselves on being traditional, classic, alternative, documentary or commercial style Wedding photographers. Some photos may have intense colours or some maybe quite muted and moody with portraits that resemble a painting more than a photo. It's great we have so much choice but it's important to know who you're hiring and what style they like to provide. If you prefer a 'commercial' look then you don't want to hire a documentary photographer as you'll have a conflicting vision of what photos you're trying to get.
So what is my style as a Wedding photographer here in the UK? I like to think of myself as a documentary style wedding photographer capturing moments of happiness and joy as they happen, but also adding in some more classic portrait work. I'm always keen to experiment and get a few more creative shots too.
Documentary Wedding Style Photographer
The bulk of my photos from a Wedding Day will be in a documentary style, acting like a photo journalist. I try to put myself in the right position at the right time to get those perfect moments; big smiles, tears of joy and laughter. I try to be as unobtrusive as possible allowing you to get on with your day without being directed around by the photographer! For me, this approach creates the most timeless and natural photos to remember your day. I really want the happiness to just shine through the photos and take you right back into the moment whenever you look back at them.
I make sure I'm fully aware of the timeline of the day in advance so I'm always ready for the next big moment. We'll discuss it all before the day so we're all comfortable on how things will fold out throughout the day.
Classic Wedding Photography
Aside from documenting the day as it happens, I also make time to get outside and capture some more classical Wedding Portraits. I still like the images to feel natural but I'll provide plenty of direction so we can take some beautiful compositions. My aim here is to really get some timeless, genuine photos that will still be a pleasure to look at in 5, 10 or even 30 years time! Happiness and emotion, that's the look I want.
There's always a fine balance between overdoing something, making a photo too colourful, contrasty or moody and getting a look that should hopefully, remain looking good for years after the photo was taken.
Story Telling Wedding Photography
Above all though, I want all the photos to come together and tell the story of your Wedding day. I work hard to get the shots throughout the day and really want you to be happy with the final results. It gives me a real sense of job satisfaction when I know it's a job well done. I went to a friend's house who I had taken some Wedding Photos for and was really chuffed to see my photo printed and framed on their wall. Perfect!
I'm looking forward to telling the story of your Wedding Day!
